Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announces retirement plan

LONDON – Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova plans to retire within a few months, Czech players said on Thursday.

The announcement on social media comes the day after Kvitova was awarded Wimbledon wildcard.

“I’m excited and looking forward to soaking in the championship, Wimbledon’s beauty once again, and this is the most precious memory of my career,” Kvitova said.

“While I’m not entirely sure what I look like in the U.S. hard drive swing, I plan to finish my active playing career at the U.S. Open later this summer in New York.”

The 35-year-old Kvitova, who was ranked second in career highest, also helped the Czech Republic win six trophys in the Federal Cup, now known as the Billie Jean King Cup.

Kvitova played in Wimbledon in 2023 and became a mother for the first time when her son was born last year at the All England Club.

Kvitova returned to the WTA Tour in Austin, Texas in February, 17 months away from the stadium and is currently ranked 572nd.

Wimbledon begins on June 30.
