Wimbledon brings David Beckham, Maria Sharapova and other stars on Day 1

LONDON – David Beckham and Maria Sharapova compete in one of the sports and screen stars in Wimbledon on Monday.

Sharapova, the 17-year-old All England Club champion in 2004, posted a selfie with Beckham on Instagram: “Jeweld (Wimbledon) starts”, with tennis emojis.

Sharapova will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame later this year.

Former England football captain Beckham is listed as guests who are expected to compete in the Centre Court on Day 1. Others include Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne and former England football coach Gareth Southgate.

Beckham is the only player to win England in three World Cups. He is co-owner of Miami Club Club, led by Lionel Messi and was eliminated by the U.S. Club World Cup on Sunday, losing 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain.
