Canada’s Leila Fernandez advances to semifinals at Japan Open

Leylah Fernandez continues her promising campaign in Asia.
The fourth-seeded Canadian advanced to the Japan Open semifinals on Friday with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory over world No. 65 Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia.
Fernandez, ranked 27th in the world, handed Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka three sets in their past two matches in China, but has won three straight sets in Japan.
Fernandez, who hails from Laval, Que., will next face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Switzerland’s Viktoria Golubic and Romania’s Sorana Sistea.
Fernandez is the top seed remaining after top-ranked Osaka withdrew from the quarterfinals with a left leg injury.
The WTA Tour said Jacqueline Christian withdrew before the match, allowing her to easily advance to the semifinals.
Fernandez, 23, won the Washington title earlier this year and has four WTA titles in her career.
