Canada’s Victoria Mboko will have the chance to play the most famous in the women’s tennis match after another victory on Wednesday.
Mboko, 18, continued her impressive season by defeating Italy’s Arianna Zucchini 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday.
Mboko won two qualifying matches to win a spot in the main draw, and he next ranked fourth in seed Coco Gauff. The American reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year and won her first professional Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2023.
Wednesday marked Mboko’s second victory at the WTA Tour 1000 level. After getting a wildcard, she entered the second round of the Miami Open earlier this year.
Zucchini ranks 620th in the world. She received the wildcard for the event.
Mboko, the 156th-ranked world, has a record of 33-3 this season and has largely participated in the ITF World Tour, where she won five championships. She also won two singles matches for Canada in the Billie Jean King Cup.
Canada’s Bianca Andreescu plans to face Italy’s Federica Urgesi in its first round late Wednesday.
