Leylah Fernandez beat Canada Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-1 in the first women’s singles action at the U.S. Open on Sunday.
Fernandez, of Fernandez, Quebec, has an ace and three double faults, but converts it on all five of her breakout opportunities.
Marino from Vancouver launched two ACEs in an hour, eight minutes and had three double faults in an hour.
However, she only switched one of five breakpoint opportunities.
The 34-year-old Marino entered the main draw on Sunday after entering a three-round qualifying round.
No. 31 seed Fernandez will next face the winner between Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic and Elsa Jacquemot of France.
