Two-time Paralympian Rob Shaw retires from wheelchair tennis

Tennis Canada announced on Tuesday that Rob Shaw will retire from wheelchair tennis following the Australian Open.

The 36-year-old from North Bay, Ont., has spent most of his career playing in the quad division, which is designed for players with permanent physical disabilities that result in severe loss of function in one or both upper limbs and affect at least three limbs.

He currently holds 54 ITF titles (25 singles titles, 29 doubles titles), the most of any Canadian, 10 of which were won at the Birmingham Nationals. He achieved a career-best ranking of sixth in singles and third in doubles in 2023.

Shaw broke into the top eight for the first time in 2022, qualifying him for his first major at the U.S. Open and finishing as doubles runner-up with American partner David Wagner. In 2023, he teamed up with Australian Heath Davidson and finished second in doubles twice more at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Internationally, Shaw won a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games and a silver medal in 2023. He also competed in the 2021 and 2024 Paralympics, reaching the quarterfinals in singles competition.

Shaw will play his 11th and final Grand Slam tournament starting on January 27. He will then join Tennis Canada part-time as a Wheelchair Tennis High Performance Consultant.
