Dabrowski, Mboko lead Canada to victory over Denmark in Billie Jean Cup playoffs

Ottawa doubles star Gabriella Dabrowski teamed up with Toronto’s Victoria Mboko to lead Canada to a victory over Denmark in the Billie Jean Cup Group A playoff game in Monterrey, Mexico on Saturday.
Dabrowski and Mboko played a singles match 20 minutes before the doubles showdown, and took 59 minutes to defeat the Danish pair of Emma Camper and Johan Christina Svensson 6-2, 6-4, winning the best-of-three match 2-1.
The Canadian team had 4 aces and only 1 double fault in the whole game, scoring 62 points out of 100. The Canadiens converted three break points.
Mboko defeated Christine Svendsen 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 24 minutes to tie the best-of-three Group A play-off match 1-1.
“I just want to play point by point, don’t rush and just believe in myself,” Mboko said in an on-court interview about how she handled the pressure of Canada trailing 1-0.
Mboko hit 11 aces and scored 86% of his first serve points. Her opponent didn’t have any aces, had four double faults, and she won just 63 percent of her first serve points.
The Canadian won 5 of 12 break points, while Christina Svensson won 2 of 5 break points and saved 7 of 12 break points.
Toronto’s Cadence Brace lost her first match to Rebecca Munk Mortensen in three sets.
The 20-year-old Brees won the first set 6-3 before losing the next two sets 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) in a match that lasted three hours and 41 minutes.
Brees had 2 aces and 6 double faults in the match, while Monk Mortensen had 4 aces and 8 double faults.
Both players performed fairly evenly in all statistical departments. The Dane had a slight advantage in winning break points (7 of 14), saving break points (15 of 23) and saving match points (9-2).
Canada will play Mexico in a winner-take-all showdown on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the 2026 qualifying round. Mexico defeated Denmark 2-1 in the Group A play-offs on Friday.
