Former player Butorak replaces Canada’s Allaster as U.S. Open tournament director

NEW YORK – Former player Eric Butorak will succeed Canada’s Stacey Allaster as tournament director at the U.S. Open, the United States Tennis Association announced Monday.

Butorak previously served as the USTA’s senior director of player relations and business development and is the tournament director for this year’s U.S. Open’s new mixed doubles event.

“This is a dream come true in many ways and the pinnacle of my tennis career and career,” Butorak said.

He had a 14-year professional tennis career, reached the top 20 in the ATP doubles rankings, and reached the doubles final at the 2014 Australian Open.

Butorak is also the chairman of the ATP Players Council.

He joined the USTA in 2016 and serves as tournament director of the 2022 Cincinnati Open.

“Eric has been instrumental in enhancing the U.S. Open experience for players and fans, and his leadership, insight and passion for the game make him the ideal person to lead the next chapter of the tournament’s success,” said USTA interim co-CEO Brian Vahaly.

Alaste, who is from Windsor, Ont., became tournament director of the U.S. Open in 2020, the first woman to hold the position in the history of the tournament, which was first held in 1881. She has been with the USTA since 2016 and previously served as President and CEO of the WTA Women’s Professional Tennis Tour.

Allaster will remain as CEO of USTA Professional Tennis until May before transitioning to an advisory role with the organization.
