Toronto’s Victoria Mboko advanced to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open with a straight-sets win over German qualifier Eva Lys on Tuesday night.
The 19-year-old Canadian, who became the second wild-card player to win the National Bank Montreal Open in August, defeated 23-year-old Rice 6-1, 6-1 in 50 minutes.
Mboko will face the winner of Leila Fernandez or Russian second seed Elena Rybakina.
Mboko finished Tuesday’s match with five aces and 11 unforced errors. Leith had no aces, one double fault and 17 unforced errors.
The Canadian hit 11 winners, double-faulted twice and won five return games. She won five of eight break points. She won 87% of her first serves, while Rice won 46% of her first serves.
