Canadian player Andreescu breaks into doubles quarterfinals at Wuhan Open

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu and China’s Yue Yuan advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals at the Wuhan Open without a goal on Thursday.

Top seeds Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani of Italy withdrew before the match, allowing Andreescu and Yuan Zheng to win comfortably.

Paolini then reached the singles quarter-finals after her opponent Clara Towson of Denmark withdrew trailing 3-6, 6-1, 3-1.

Andreescu and Yuan, from Mississauga, Ont., will next face No. 8 seeds Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Alexandra Krunic of Serbia.

Meanwhile, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand were eliminated in the round of 16 on Thursday after losing 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 to Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic and Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia.

Rutliff, who lives in Montreal, often plays with another Canadian, Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski – the pair won the U.S. Open women’s doubles title last month.
