Mboko, Auger-Aliassime named Canadian Tennis Players of the Year

National Bank Open champion Victoria Mboko was named Tennis Canada’s women’s player of the year on Tuesday, while Felix Auger-Aliassime took home men’s player of the year honors.
Mboko, who is from Burlington, Ont., has a 62-14 record in all competitions this year. Her world ranking has soared from No. 350 at the beginning of the season to the current No. 18.
Mboko’s first career WTA Tour title came last summer in Montreal as a wild card. She defeated big-name players such as Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina to reach the WTA 1000 tournament finals and defeated former world number one Naomi Osaka.
The 19-year-old Canadian capped off a breakthrough season by winning the title in Hong Kong last month and was named Women’s Singles Player of the Year and Most Improved Women’s Athlete of the Year.
Auger-Aliassime, 25, was also voted Men’s Singles Player of the Year after winning three ATP Tour titles and rising to a career-high world ranking of fifth.
“What a great season it has been for Canadian tennis and one that will undoubtedly be remembered for many years to come,” Tennis Canada CEO Gavin Ziff said in a statement.
Montreal’s Auger-Aliassime has won ATP 250 titles in Brussels, Montpellier and Adelaide. He reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals at the end of the season and became the first Canadian to achieve multiple 50-win seasons (50-24).
Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski won the Women’s Doubles Player of the Year award, while Calgary’s Cliff Harper won the Men’s Doubles Player of the Year award.
Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo was named the Most Improved Men’s Athlete and Thomas Vinos of New Westminster, B.C., was named Wheelchair Athlete of the Year.
