Stakusic Upsess Jelena Ostapenko in Guadalajara Open

Marina Stakusic finally got some motivation amid the challenging circumstances of the 2025 season.

Canadian tennis players were 6-4, 6-7 (6) in Latvia’s No. 3 seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2 in 16 rounds at the Guadalajara Open. The match was scheduled to be held on Thursday, but Rain postponed the game.

Stakusic, 20, ranked 155th in the world rankings this season and had to win two qualifying matches to reach the major draw in the Mexico WTA 500 event. She entered the game in four consecutive games.

Ostapenko ranks 24th.

Stakusic also beat Ostapenko in 16 rounds of Guadalajara Las Tyear.

Stakusic, from Mississauga, Ontario, won three of four singles matches at the end of 2023, all three of the top 60 players making headlines to help Canada win the Billie Jean King Cup.

But she hasn’t been able to reach this level since then. Stakusic is not eligible for any Grand Slam this year.

The Canadians gathered from the holes 6-1, 5-1 and defeated Polina Kudermetova in the first round of the Guadalajara.

Stakusic will face Colombia’s No. 86 Emiliana Arango in the quarterfinals later Friday.
