Friday night, the third round took an hour, 37 minutes to play, Que.
Despite more non-compulsory errors (18-12) and double faults (4-3) (4-3) than 31-seeded Fernandez, Sabalenka’s winners (25-22) and more ACEs (6-5).
Sabalenka saved all five breakout points she faced and won one of three. Fernandez tried to win the breakout point, which was her second set.
Sabalenka won 56 service points and 11 service games, while Fernandez won 39 service points and 9 service games.
Sabalenka enters the 16th round and will face Moldova’s Cristina Bucsa on Sunday.
Fernandez will return to the court on Saturday with women’s doubles partner Venus Williams. Wildcard pairing will play Eri Hozumi in Japan and Ulrikke Eikeri in Norway.
Fernandez entered the third round of the match by defeating France’s Elsa Jacquemot 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Fernandez and Williams paired the sixth seeds of Ukraine, Lyudmyla Kicheno, 6-6 (4) and Ellen Perez of Australia in the first round on Thursday.
