NEW YORK – Ben Shelton withdrew in the third round of the U.S. Open on Friday due to a left shoulder injury.
No. 6 seed Sheldon, a two-time main semifinalist, stopped in Game 4 against Adrian Mannarino to force the fifth set. It could be the cause when he landed on his left arm after winning the corner of the third set at the last point.
But in the fourth early stage, the 2023 U.S. Open started to cringe and said to his coach’s box: “I did something on my shoulders. I don’t know what that is.”
He received treatment in the middle of the scene, where the coach rubbed some cream on his left shoulder and tried to shorten the points by continuously attacking the network. But after Mannerino won the game, Sheldon was visited by the coach again and cancelled the game, wearing a towel on his head and tears in his eyes.
Mannarino, 37, from France, ended up winning his first victory in 23 careers, against the top 10 players in the Grand Slam.
“He was leading the game when he started to suffer,” Mannerino said. “Honestly, he might win this game.”
Sheldon won the championship in Toronto this summer by 14-2 on a tough field and won Mannerino 14-2 in the game and won 14-2 in the game.
Shelton’s left-handed serve was one of the most powerful tennis serves, with his 140 mph ace in the first set against the third fastest in the U.S. Open.
