Offender in the middle with Djokovic, Fonseca close

The Australian Open draw was held on Thursday afternoon at Melbourne Park. Novak Djokovic entered Jannik Sinner’s half, setting up a potential semi-final between the 10-time champion and the two-time defending champion.
It’s an interesting matchup for Sinner all around, as the second-ranked Italian could face Joao Fonseca in the third round. Common enemy Ben Shelton could be Sinner’s quarterfinal opponent. Shelton, however, has a rough first round matchup with Ugo Humbert on his hands.
Elsewhere in the lower half of the bracket, Grigor Dimitrov and Tomas Machac paid a high price for being excluded. They will go head-to-head in the first round, with the winner possibly meeting Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round and Lorenzo Musetti in the last 32. That quarter also features Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Jakub Mensik, and the dangerous undrafted Hubert Hurkacz.
At the top of the table, Carlos Alcaraz appears to have a friendly road through Melbourne as he bids for his first Australian Open title. The world No. 1 could face Sebastian Korda in the third round and Tommy Paul or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the last 16. Alex de Minaur, Alexander Bublik, and Frances Tiafoe could be quarterfinal opponents.
Alexander Zverev’s category is open. Other challengers include Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev, and Andrey Rublev. Zverev will begin his second season against one of the best uncapped players on the court, Gabriel Diallo. Rublev will also be on guard from the start, as he will face Matteo Arnaldi.
