Canadian players Fernandez and Mboko reach the top 16 at the Hong Kong Open

Two Canadians are moving on in Hong Kong.

Leylah Fernandez and Victoria Mboko each won the last 32 of the WTA 250 Hard Court Open on Tuesday.

Fernandez, who won the Japan Open earlier this month, defeated China’s Wang Xiyu in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The Montreal native, ranked No. 22 on tour, won 72 percent of her first serves while converting five of eight break-serve opportunities in the win. She will next face No. 44 German player Eva Lys.

Mboko, meanwhile, needed to make a comeback, defeating Australia’s Talia Gibson in three sets, with the Canadian winning 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4.

The 19-year-old won the National Bank Open hosted by Rogers this summer, and she used her serve advantage to win the victory, blasting 19 aces to Gibson’s three.

She will next face Alexandra Ella of the Philippines or Katie Boulter of England.
