NEW YORK – Daniil Medvedev was fined $42,500 on Wednesday, more than a third of his $110,000 tournament prize for his first round loss after photographers hovered on the court during the game.
Tournament referee Jake Garner docked Medvedev for $30,000 as a sign of non-sports behavior, with an additional $12,500 spent on racket abuse. At the end of the game, Medvedev repeatedly hit a racket at his sideline chair, destroying the equipment.
Medvedev is a top player who won the championship in 2021 at Flushing Meadows.
Bonzi was the point of winning, and led 5-4 in the third set, when the photographer (later revoked) began walking on the stadium side of the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Allensworth told the photographer that he would end up and then announced that Bonzi would receive another first serve due to the delay. Medvedev approached officials complaining that that was when things got crazy. The crowd began booing, shouting, “Second serving!” Overall, the game lasted more than six minutes as Medvedev pissed fans and insulted Allensworth.
“He wants to go home, guys. He doesn’t like it here. He’s paid for the game, not by the hour,” Medvedev shouted at the microphone behind the chair.
After the order was resumed, Medvedev also included it in the fourth group. But Bonzi ended up winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4.
This is Medvedev’s third straight Grand Slam loss in the first round, including last month’s match against Bonzi at Wimbledon.
