Marino rally wins our open women’s singles qualifiers, Branstin bounces

Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino began to be strong, faded, and then scrambled to survive on two match points before rallied to save her bid to qualify for the 145th U.S. Open Tennis Championship on Monday.

Marino won her first women’s singles match 6-3 in 31 minutes against Lanlana Tararudee, but later beat Thailand’s 21-year-old 6-2 5-3 before winning a 7-5 victory in a match that took two hours and 11 minutes to finish.

Marino’s double drawbacks are more than Talarud (8-6), fewer A (9-8) and fewer games won (7-6). But she did a great job in the third set, breaking Talarud with a 5-3 record and breaking her exciting comeback 5-5.

Marion won four of five breakout points, while Tararudee won only four of 11 games. The Canadians won 67% of the first points, while the younger opponent scored 73 points.

Marino, 34, advanced to Japan’s Mai Hontama.

In other qualifying matches on Monday, Carson Branstine of Canada defeated China’s Xiyu Wang 6-3 but lost the game 6-3, 6-3 in the next two sets.

Branstin had 52 unmandatory mistakes in the two-hour 13-minute game, with only one ACE.

King leads the winner (21-18), ACE (2-1) and double failure (8-3).

Branstine earned 70% of her points in the first serve, while King scored 64%, who won four of six breakout points, while Branstine won just nine points.

Branstine was born and raised in California, but since her mom is Canadian, she has dual citizenship.

Meanwhile, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Quebec played Croatia’s Dino Prizmic in the men’s singles match on Monday.

The U.S. Open begins Sunday, the match will be held within 15 days and ends with the women’s singles final on September 6 and the men’s singles final on September 7.

The defending champions are Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, who are the top seeds. Venus Williams is also in the field, returning to the Grand Slam tennis at the age of 45.
