Cobolli saves seven MPS to send Italy to Davis Cup Final

Flavio Cobolli sent Italy to the Davis Cuff Final in spectacular fashion on Friday night in front of the Bologna crowd.

COBOLLI NEBELGIUM’s Zizou Bergs saved seven tie points before the Italian finally converted the 15th chance to keep it all 6-3, 6-6 (5), 7-6 (5). A thrilling semi-final rubber lasted three hours and four minutes, resulting in a 2-0 defeat to the host nation. It was preceded by Matteo Berretttia’s 6-3, Raphael Collignon’s victory.

The Bergs held on for two points at 4-5 in third place before fighting back five more in the Timebreaker. Cobolli, who trailed 6-4 in the ‘Breaker, was rejected by many game points in Bergs’ own. World 3.

“It’s really hard to say anything about this game,” said Cobolli during his interview on the court. “We played for our country and we fought a lot for this, we won and I got my dream, and we’re saving my game now. I really played with all my teams, because it’s one of the best days of my life.”

“I think this game has only Davis Cup,” Captain Filippo Valandri commented. “We saw two great players fight for their country. They both did an incredible job. There was only one thing he had to win. In the end, we did it.”

The Italians are waiting for either Germany or Spain in the final on Sunday. They will be going to the Davis Cup three times, lifting the medal in 2023 and 2024 when they are held by the Davis Cuff in Malaga, Spain.
