Coco Gauff beats Jessica Pegula to win Wuhan Open title

WUHAN, China — Coco Gauff won the Wuhan Open on Sunday, beating Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 in four straight games in the U.S. final.
The 21-year-old Gauff won her second title of the year after winning the French Open on clay and now has 11 career titles.
Trailing 5-3, the third-ranked Gauff served to save the game. She held and broke No. 6 Pegula to lead 5-5.
Pegula’s forehand volley at the net went wide, giving Gauff the first match point. With Pegula on her second serve, she sealed the victory with a forehand winner after a brief rebound.
The 31-year-old Pegula fought back to defeat No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals. But this time she ran out of steam and missed out on a 10th career title, making Gauff the second American to win the Wuhan title after Venus Williams in 2015.
This is the seventh meeting in their careers and the first in the finals. Pegula leads 4-3 against Gauff, with whom she has won multiple WTA doubles titles.
Goff improved his record to 11-3 in the final; Pegula fell to 9-11.
