Korda is seen in Delray Beach; he might come back

Sebastian Korda played impressively in his match against Alex Michelsen on Wednesday night.
A few years ago, American Sebastian Korda was ranked 15th in the world. Then the injury. There are many and many injuries. He had elbow surgery, sprained his back, and suffered a stress fracture. His ranking sits at 50th in the world right now, but don’t let that fool you into thinking there are 49ers better than him – because if he’s healthy, he has the potential to be a top 20 player again.
On Wednesday evening in a cool but breezy Delray Beach Open, Korda reminded the crowd just how good he is. Korda and Alex Michelsen put on a crowd-shooting clinic at times. Ryan Harrison, who was batting with his American teammate, was sent off heavily. Delray Beach marks Korda’s third straight championship.

At the risk of jinxing the poor boy, he it’s just possible come back. Since entering the scene in 2020, he has shown great potential. His play is creative and intelligent, and has a wonderful touch. The 25-year-old historically had some weakness in his mind. What is notable is that he led 5-2 in the third set against Rafael Nadal at the 2022 Masters event in Indian Wells. Nadal went on to win the match with ‘third serve’.
Still, I can’t help but wonder if the parade of injuries has given Korda a different perspective. It’s one thing to play badly – it’s another to not be able to play at all because your body has let you down. He didn’t show on Wednesday night that he is ready to accept his talent. Korda has always been a natural shooter, but what he showed against Michelsen in this game was quiet confidence.
It’s the best I’ve seen in years. Obviously there are no guarantees for professional athletes, but this could be Korda’s year.
