Victoria Mboko advances to third round of Australian Open

Toronto’s Victoria Mboko punched her ticket into the third round of the women’s singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Caty McNally at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The 17th-seeded Canadian will face the winner of Uzbekistan’s Polina Kudermetova or Denmark’s Clara Towson.

Mboko defeated McNally in 1 hour and 32 minutes, hitting an ace, 15 winners, 24 unforced errors and two double faults. McNally had no aces, 14 winners, 27 unforced errors and six double faults.

Mboko won six of nine service games and five of nine return games.

The Canadian defeated wild card player Emerson Jones of Australia 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.

In women’s doubles, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Luisa Stefani of Brazil defeated Jessica Pegula and McCartney Kessler of the United States 6-4, 7-6 (3). The winner will face France’s Elsa Jacques Motte and Colombia’s Emiliana Arango in the second round.

It took Dabrowski and Stephanie 1 hour and 46 minutes to eliminate the American Tag Team Team. They had 1 ace and 3 double faults, while the US team had no aces and no double faults.

The winner performed better in the second game, winning 36 points to the Americans’ 28, with Dabrowski and her partner winning 55 percent of their second serves to the Americans’ 33 percent.

In another women’s doubles match, Leylay Fernandez of Laval, Que., and Timea Babos of Hungary lost to Moldovan Cristina Bucsa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in 2 hours and 4 minutes.
