Jannik Sinner brings our open championship defense to the semifinals by defeating Musetti

NEW YORK – Jannik Sinner returned to the U.S. Open semifinals by defeating Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the men’s main quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
The No. 1 seed continues a simple championship defense, facing No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime on Friday, who beat No. 8 Alex de Minaur 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Sinner entered his fifth straight semi-finals, with Friday’s victory reaching the finals of all four Grand Slams this year. He won 26 games in 26 straight games on the hard court. These include the past two Australian Open champions and a victory in New York a year ago.
“It’s a great show. Very solid, especially starting with a very, very good one,” Sina said.
He only took 2 hours on Wednesday – the first set took only 27 minutes – to fight all seven breakout points he faced. He has lost just 38 of five games, a second place to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since 2020.
Sinner, who won 31 consecutive service games, won 42 of 46 first-time points (91%).
Musetti, who scored so far at this year’s French Open, was trying to make it to his first US Open semifinals in 2024. However, he got a terrible start against his Davis Cup teammates, falling behind 5-0, winning just 25 points and 9 in the first set.
As the game progressed, he began to gain more opportunities for sinners, but could never rest and perhaps waste everything.
“We have to take the friendship away for the game, and obviously when we shake hands, everything is fine.”
