Fernandez bounces back in Australian Open first round singles match

Janice Tjen became Indonesia’s number one women’s player with a WTA singles title and three doubles titles.
The 23-year-old reached No. 53 in the WTA singles rankings in November and her coach predicts the best is yet to come.
Thien demonstrated that progress with an upset victory over Canada’s Leila Fernandez in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Fernandez, from Laval, Que., entered the Grand Slam as the No. 22 seed but was eliminated 6-2, 7-6 (1) in one hour and 43 minutes.
Tjen finished with 4 aces, 17 winners, 6 double faults and 27 unforced errors. Fernandez hit 2 aces, 16 winners, 5 double faults and 28 unforced errors.
Fernandez won 2 of 8 break points and won 2 of 10 return games, while Thien won 4 of 7 break points and won 4 of 10 return games.
Tjen advances to face the winner of Czech Karolina Pliskova or American qualifier Sloane Stephens.
Toronto’s Victoria Mboko and American partner Iva Jovic were scheduled to face Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and Estonia’s Ingrid Neel in the women’s doubles later in the day.
