Dabrowski, Mboko advance to Indian Wells doubles quarterfinals

Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani, ranked second in the women’s doubles at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, defeated the American pair of Payton Stearns and Ingrid Neal 6-4, 6-2 on Monday.
Dabrowski and Stefani won the best-of-three match in just 61 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals and will face the seventh-seeded pair of Spanish Cristina Busa and American Nicole Melichar Martinez.
Dabrowski and Stefani ended the round of 16 with two aces and a double fault. They won all nine of their service games and won three of their nine return games. They also won three of six break points.
Stearns and Neal hit 2 aces and 1 double fault while winning 6 of 9 service games. They didn’t win any returns or break points.
Toronto’s Victoria Mboko and her Russian partner Mirra Andreeva defeated Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and American Hailey Baptiste in a thrilling three-set match.
Mboko and Andreeva won 7-6 (7), 3-6, 11-9 in one hour and 40 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face Serbian Alexandra Krunic and Russian-born Kazakhstani Anna Danilina.
Mboko and Andreeva hit four aces and six double faults in Monday’s victory. They won only four of 11 service games but five of 10 return games. They also saved 6 of 13 break points and won 5 of 8 break points.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles, Brazil’s Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos quickly beat Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo and his American partner Evan King 6-2, 6-2 in a 59-minute match.
The Brazilian hit two aces and two double faults, winning four of 10 break points and saving their only break point. Diallo and Kim had no aces and only a double fault, losing their only break point and saving six of 10 break points.
Diallo and King also failed to win any return games and won four of eight service games. Their opponents won four of eight games and won all eight service games.
The Brazilian team advanced to the round of 16 and faced American Christian Harrison and British partner Neil Skupsky.
