Mertens saves 11 points in Libema Open defeat of Alexandrova

Netherlands’s S-Hertogenbosch – Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens saved 11 match points before defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova, reaching the finals of Libema on Saturday.

The WTA said it was the biggest game point saved in the major women’s raffle competition this decade.

After repeated resistance failures, Mertens, ranked 20th, won 6-4 on the pastures of S-Hertogenbosch 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.

“I didn’t even know that was 11 years old, one or two I lost the numbers,” said Mertens of the third seed. “I’m very focused on the game and of course, I always like me and I keep moving forward.”

Mertens will face Romania’s qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final.
