Carlos Alcaraz ends seven-year partnership with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero

World number one Carlos Alcaraz is parting ways with his long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, who guided him to the top of men’s tennis during a highly successful seven-year partnership.
Alcaraz announced the decision to end their collaboration in a message posted on his social networks on Wednesday. Ferrero thanked his protégé in a separate statement and said he hoped he “will be able to continue.”
Ferrero has coached the Spaniard since he was 15, and Alcaraz won six Grand Slams under his leadership: two French Open titles, two Wimbledon titles and two U.S. Open titles. He has won 24 tour-level titles, including eight Masters 1000 trophies.
“After more than seven years together, Juanqui and I have decided to close our chapter as coaches and players,” Alcaraz, 22, wrote. “Thank you for turning a childhood dream into a reality. We began this journey when I was a child and you have been with me through this incredible journey, both on and off the court. I have thoroughly enjoyed every step of the way with you.”
Alcaraz became the youngest No. 1 player in the ATP rankings at age 19 after winning the 2022 U.S. Open under Ferrero.
“Today was a tough day,” Ferrero said. “One of the things that’s hard to find is the right words. Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when there are so many shared experiences behind it. We worked hard, grew together, and shared unforgettable moments.”
Alcaraz did not say whether he would hire a new coach as a replacement. Last year, Alcaraz hired Samuel Lopez to work with Ferrero.
Earlier this month, Ferrero and Lopez were named ATP Coaches of the Year after helping Alcazar regain the No. 1 spot. In another prolific season, Alcazar won a career-best and season-leading 71 matches and won eight titles, including the French Open and U.S. Open trophies.
“Despite the difficulties, we are an incredible team and I believe you will continue to have great success,” Ferrero said. “I hope I can continue. I believe great memories and great people will always find a way to meet again. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
