Canadian tennis legend Milos Raonic says ‘the time has come’ to retire

Former Wimbledon finalist and Canadian phenom Milos Raonic, who has not played since mid-2024, announced his retirement from professional tennis in an emotional social media post on Sunday.

“The time has come for me to retire from tennis. You know the day will come but somehow you are never ready for it,” Raonic, 35, wrote on his Instagram page. “I am ready. Tennis has been my love and obsession for most of my life.”

Raonic, who is from Cornhill, Ont., last competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he was eliminated in the first round by Germany’s Dominik Kopfer.

At his peak, he was ranked third in the Professional Tennis Association’s men’s singles competition. He won eight ATP Tour titles and reached the final of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships, where he was defeated in straight sets by Andy Murray.

He has reached at least the quarterfinals in 10 Grand Slam main draws and has an impressive 92-37 career record in major events.

“An important part of my tennis journey has been the incredible people I’ve been lucky enough to meet around the world,” Raonic wrote. “What’s next? I’m not slowing down. There’s more life to live and I’m as motivated and hungry as I was in 2011 when I made my breakthrough on tour.”

Raonic became a true ambassador for Canadian tennis, establishing himself as one of the greatest servers of the Open era.

Injuries cut Raonic’s career short, and a shoulder injury in 2025 never fully recovered enough to allow him to attempt a comeback.
