Canadian player Auger-Aliassime defeats Zverev to advance to ATP Finals semi-finals
Canadian tennis star Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the ATP Finals semifinals for the first time in his career on Friday, defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-6 (4).
The 25-year-old from Montreal improved to 2-1 in the round robin and will face No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the semifinals of the elite season finale on Saturday.
Auger-Aliassime, the eighth seed in Turin, got the only break of serve in the final game of the first set. After both sides held serve in the second set, Auger-Aliassime trailed 4-3 in the decider and then scored four points in a row, the last two of which came in the second set, ultimately upsetting the third-seeded German.
Auger-Aliassime improved to 4-6 against Zverev. He has won two tournaments this year, including a third-round victory at the U.S. Open.
The Canadians defeated Alcaraz 3-4, with the Spanish star winning his last four games.
In the other semi-final, defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy had a duel with Alex De Minaur of Australia.
