Canada’s Mboko, Stakucic withdraw from Billie Jean Gold Cup qualifiers

Tennis Canada will enter the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in Kazakhstan without two key players.

The organization announced on Saturday that Victoria Mboko and Marina Stakusic had withdrawn from the tournament due to injury concerns.

Ariana Arseneault has been added to the roster, joining Bianca Andreescu, Gabriela Dabrowski and Kayla Cross.

Mboko said the reason for her absence was a medical procedure.

“It is with great regret that I have to withdraw from the upcoming Billie Jean Gold Cup in Kazakhstan,” Mboko said in a statement. “I have had recurring toothaches in recent days and will need to have my four wisdom teeth removed in the coming days. In light of this, I regret that I will not be able to travel to Kazakhstan and will therefore miss this tie.

“There is no greater honor than playing for and representing Team Canada – I wish the team the best of luck next week and I very much look forward to joining the team again later this year.”

The 19-year-old added that representing Canada remains a priority.

Meanwhile, Stacusic is dealing with a back injury that forced her to step aside ahead of the game.

“I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers but I feel it’s the best decision I can make for the team as I’m not 100 per cent physically yet,” she said. “Representing Team Canada is an honor that I don’t take for granted, and the few weeks I spent with the team were some of my favorite times of the year.”
