Canada’s M’Boko beats Andreeva to advance to quarterfinals at Qatar Open

Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko advanced to the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open on Wednesday, defeating fifth seed Mira Andreeva 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
Mboko, seeded No. 10 at the WTA 1000 Hard Court Championship, saved match point after Andreeva double-faulted and then scored a crucial break to tie the third set at 5-5.
The Canadian ended up winning on match point with a backhand winner in the third set tie-break.
The match was the latest chapter in a budding rivalry between two of the top junior players in women’s tennis.
Last month, they met for the first time in the final of the Adelaide International, and the 18-year-old Russian won 6-3, 6-1.
Mboko improves to 11-3 on the season. The 19-year-old from Toronto is coming off a breakout 2025, winning two titles, including the 1,000 title at the National Bank Montreal Open.
She will next face the third-round winner between Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and China’s Zheng Qinwen.
