Canada’s M’Boko advances to face Sabalenka at Australian Open

Victoria Mboko is heading into the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The 19-year-old from Toronto advanced after defeating Danish 14th seed Clara Towson 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3 on Friday local time.

No. 17 seed Mboko hit six aces but had to overcome nine double faults in Grand Slam tennis. She also broke five of 13 break point opportunities and won 65 percent of her first-serve points.

Towson hit five aces, four double faults, five of six break opportunities, and a 63% first-server scoring rate. She fought back from 5-4 down in the second set, but Mboko took the match in the third set.

Mboko will face top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round, the Belarusian who defeated Anastasia Potapova in the third round on Thursday.

Previously, Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani defeated French player Elsa Jacquemot and Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the third round of women’s doubles.

Fifth seeds Dabrowski and Stephanie will next face the ninth-seeded pair of Spain’s Cristina Busa and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
