Canada’s Leylah Fernandez loses in third round at Charleston Open

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez lost to Russia’s Diana Shnaider 6-3, 6-0 in the third round of the Charleston Tennis Open on Thursday.

Schneider faced only two break points and saved both of them and put constant pressure on Fernandez’s serve.

The seventh-seeded Russian had 15 break point opportunities and saved four of them.

Schneider will face either top-seeded Jessica Pegula of the United States or 14th-seeded Elisabeth Cociareto of Italy in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 event.

Fernandez, the ninth seed out of South Carolina, fell to 4-9 on the year.

Schneider has won three straight against Fernandez to take a 3-2 lead in the career series.
