Canada’s Leylah Fernandez falls in Wimbledon

Leylah Fernandez failed to outperform Wimbledon’s second round for the third consecutive year.

The 29th seed Canadians fell 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday at Laura Siegemund of the All England Club.

Fernandez of Montreal has now won one victory in every game since every game. She has never participated in the third round.

On Wednesday, she was quickly dispatched by the seedless Siegmund, twice with double responsibility, and failed to be the trump card.

Fernandez was unable to convert any of her three breakout opportunities, while seven opportunities were broken four times.

Siegemund will face the sixth seed American Madison Key in Round 3.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe defeated China’s Western Conference Zheng and Xinyu Wang 6-1, 6-4 to enter the second round of women’s doubles action.

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo will compete in their second round later Wednesday.
