Canada’s Leylah Fernandez beats Lys to advance to Hong Kong quarterfinals

Leylah Fernandez defeated Germany’s Eva Lys 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open.

The second seed in this match won 73% of first serve points and broke Rice four times in 68 minutes of play.

Fernandez, from Laval, Que., ended up hitting 3 aces and 1 double fault, winning five consecutive games to end the game.

The victory was her seventh in her last eight matches, including her Japan Open title earlier this month.

Fernandez, 23, will next face seventh seed Sorana Sistia of Romania.

Third-seeded Victoria Mboko of Canada will face Alexandra Ella of the Philippines on Thursday.
