Canada’s Fernandez wins first match at Tokyo Pan Pacific Open

Leylah Fernandez continues to make a name for herself in Japan.

The 23-year-old from Laval, Que., won her fifth career singles title at the Japan Open in Osaka on Sunday and defeated Maria Sakkari of Greece in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Monday night.

Fernandez took two hours and two minutes to defeat the 30-year-old qualifier 7-6(5), 6-4.

The Canadian finished the match with two aces, a double fault, 47 unforced errors and 32 winners. Fernandez scored 58% on his first serve and 50% on his second serve.

She saved 6 of 11 break points and won 6 of 10 break points.

In the next match, Toronto’s Victoria Mboko will take on Bianca Andreescu in an All-Ontario match.
