Canada’s Diallo advanced to Indian Wells, Andreescu was eliminated in the first round

Canada’s Gabriel Diallo earned his first win on the ATP Tour in nearly two months, defeating Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the first round of the Indian Wells tennis tournament.

The 24-year-old from Montreal, ranked 38th in the world, beat 94th-ranked Bellucci 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the men’s singles match on Wednesday.

Diallo, who had been eliminated in the first round of his previous four ATP events, had 10 aces and only committed one double fault.

Next up, Diallo will face No. 17 seed Andrei Rublev of Russia.

Later in the night, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., lost 6-3, 6-4 to GaĆ«l Monfils of France. Canada’s Denis Shapovalov is scheduled to face Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas later on Wednesday.

In the women’s draw, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., lost to Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-1.

Andreescu won the event in 2019, hitting 12 aces but making five double faults and scoring just 57% of her first-serve points.

Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ont., also withdrew from the competition. She lost to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
