Denis Shapovalov is returning home at the All England Club.
The No. 27-seed Canadian gave up his first round in Wimbledon’s first round 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday.
Shapovalov, 26, fired six aces at one of Navone’s men, but lost 11 times in the meantime.
It was his earliest withdrawal from the Grassland Grand Slam since 2019, when he was also caught in the first round.
Shapovalov’s best career performance was Wimbledon, who reached the semi-finals in 2021.
Canada’s Victoria Mboko will debut in Wimbledon later Tuesday after she will compete with a lucky loser. She will face Magdalena Frech, No. 25, in Poland.
Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime, Gabriel Diallo and Leylah Fernandez advanced to the second round on Monday.
