Canada’s Denis Shapovalov beats Marcos Giron to head to Mexico Open Semi-Final

Denis Shapovalov lasted a wonderful February on Thursday.

The Canadian tennis player won his eighth game in a row and went to the Mexican Open semifinals by defeating Acapulco’s Marcos Giron 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The ninth seed Shapovalov, who won the Dallas Open earlier this month, will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinals on Friday night. It marks Canada’s first outdoor semi-final since 2022.

The game is open, with no top seven seeds without the top four.

Three of the top five seeds either exited or retired earlier this week due to stomach problems.

Shapovalov ranked 32nd in the world, winning the first time in three matches against Giron. World No. 52 defeated Shapovalov in Adelaide, Australia earlier this year.

If he wins the ATP Tour 500, Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario has a 22-point ranking.
