Canada’s Denis Shapovalov beats Marcos Giron at Swiss Indoors

Denis Shapovalov fought off a match point to beat American Marcos Gironne 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the Swiss Indoors on Tuesday.
The Canadian, seeded ninth, has lost three of his four career matches against Geelong in Basel.
Shapovalov relied on his serve to save match points after falling behind 30-40, 5-6. He then dominated the decider against the world No. 57.
Shapovalov defeated Giron 13-3 and saved 5 of 7 break points.
The Richmond Hill, Ont., product is about to reach the semifinals of the Stockholm Open.
Shapovalov will next face lucky loser Valentin Royer of France.
Felix Auger-Aliassime will face Gabriel Diallo in the first round in Montreal on Wednesday.
