Branstin beats Andrescu in Wimbledon qualifiers across Canada

Carson Branstine defeated Bianca Andreescu 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 in the All-Canada second round Wimbledon women’s qualifiers on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Branstine, a California native, represents Canada through family relations in Toronto, his first round of competition and first round dissatisfaction with French Openist Lois Boisson.

Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ontario, struggled in the serve, winning only 57% of her first-place score. Compared to Branstin’s one-sixth, the 2019 U.S. Open champion managed only three A’s.

Branstine won the grassy season for the first time with his first WTA Tour victory in the Netherlands earlier this month, and will be facing Cyprus’ Raluca Serban with Wimbledon’s main drawing berth online.

Also on Wednesday, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Quebec lost 6-3, 6-2 to Britain’s Oliver Tarvet.

Victoria Mboko of Toronto, 18, is scheduled to face Switzerland’s Valentina Ryser later that day.
