Best Seed Alexander Zverev advances to the National Bank quarterfinals

Toronto – Germany’s top seed Alexander Zverev led Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 1-0, when the Argentinian retired due to a belly injury that opened at the National Bank on Saturday night.
Zverev was promoted to Australia’s defending champion Alexei Popyrin in the quarter-finals. In the first night, Popyrin of the 18th seed defeated Denmark’s fifth seed Holger rune 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Zverev was the 2017 champion ranked third in the world, skipping the tough event ending Thursday with No. 1 Jannik Sinner (winner of 2023) and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. No. 5 Jack Draper and No. 6 No. 6 Novak Djokovic also sat down.
Zverev won his 24th Tour title in Munich in April.
Alex Michelsen reached the quarterfinals in the afternoon, leading American learner Tien 6-3, 6-3. Michelsen will face Russia’s 11th seed Karen Khachanov to win 6-4, 7-5 in Norway’s eighth seed Casper Ruud.
