Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul

NEW YORK – Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul quit the Davis Cup team next weekend due to injury, with the Americans named three substitutes on Thursday.

The second round against the Czech Republic added Reilly Opelka, Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek from September 12-13, which will be played in Delray Beach, Florida. They joined the team of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.

No.6 Sheldon had to stop playing in the third round of the U.S. Open due to pain in his left shoulder. Paul ranked 14th, with Alexander Bublik being eliminated in five sets and appearing to have a stomach injury.

Opelka lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the first round. Both Ram and Krajicek ranked first in doubles.

The best five games are two singles on the first day, followed by doubles and possibly two singles on the second day. The first team to win the Davis Cup final 8 in Bologna, Italy from November 18 to 23 won three victories.
