Australian Open Day 3: Fonseca, Monfils crash

Gael Monfils’ last trip to the Australian Open came to an abrupt end with a first-round loss on Tuesday evening.

Normally that would be a poor result at Melbourne Park, but it wasn’t for the uussie under the other side of the net. For Dane Sweeny, his 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4, 7-5 upset of Monfils marked his first match win at a Grand Slam and his third match win at the ATP level. The suspect, 24, advanced after three hours and 51 minutes.

“First of all, thank you very much,” Monfils told the crowd afterward. “For me, my journey here with you guys started in 2003 when I first came here. Now it’s 2026 and in a way it’s the end but thank you so much for the amazing ride.

The season premiere lost another big name when Joao Fonseca fell to Eliot Spizzirri 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
