The leg injury suffered by Carlos Alcaraz during his NITTTO ATP Finals loss to Jannik Sonner will put a damper on Davis Cup competition.

Alcaraz made the announcement via social media Tuesday morning.

“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play against Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna,” Alkaraz tweeted. “I have edema on my right side and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I have always said that playing Spain is the biggest thing and I was looking forward to fighting for the Salad Bowl [trophy]. I’m going home in pain….”

The Davis Couff Finals take place Tuesday through Sunday. Spain’s Quarterfinal Contest Contere Town with the Czech is set for Thursday, and ALCARAZ’s team is actually an underdog without him on the court. The lineup of Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez, and Pablo Carreno Busta faces a Czech team that boasts Jiri Lehecka, Jakub Mensik, and Tomas Machac.

The defense made in Italy for two times is not sinful, but it is among the favorites with Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Berretini, and the Duos Duo of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

Alcaraz ends his year at No. 1 in the world. His record of 71-9 titles featured eight titles, including two grand slams at the French Open and US Open.
