National Bank Open: What to watch, Sunday schedule

The National Bank Open, held by Rogers, began its extended format with a major draw on Sunday.

Now for a 12-day game with 96 players on each side, the NBO will provide additional rounds for women in Montreal and men in Toronto.

Those 32 seeds are goodbye in the first round, which means they won’t see the court until Tuesday.

However, there are still many compelling moves on both sites, with Canadian players taking center stage.

This is something for the open day shop.

Can Andreescu find Canadian magic?

Bianca Andreescu’s return due to injury has not gone well this season.

The 2019 U.S. Open champion failed to qualify for the French Open and Wimbledon, and was only 8-8 this season.

After several long absences, Andreescu is ranked 188th in the rankings, but the Canadians enjoy most of their success on the hard court.

A few weeks before the U.S. Magic Open, Mississauga, Ontario, the native won the National Bank Open Championship at his home in Toronto.

Andreescu faced a harsh test against Barbora Krejcikova on Sunday night. The Czech player has two professional Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon last year. Like Andreescu, Krejcikova started the year on the injury list.

It marked the first meeting between the two since 2017, when Krejcikova won the qualifying match in Austria.

Andreescu knocked down the 2024 NBO in a wild first round clash, losing 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Toronto’s Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko.

Vasek Pospisil has been the glue for Canadian tennis for more than a decade.

His best moments were in the Davis Cup, including the country’s first championship in 2022.

The 35-year-old Pospisil, who finished the career-best 25th in the singles rankings and won the Wimbledon doubles title with American Jack Sock, announced that he will retire after the match.

Pospisil has a limited schedule for the season, and he faces the qualifiers on Sunday night.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko is in the midst of a huge breakthrough year, entering the top 100 by winning the game in the low-level competition and entering the third round at the French Open.

The powerful 18-year-old looks like she has all the tools for a Grand Slam contender, and after the matchup earlier this year, he won stars like Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa.

Mboko ranked 88th, facing Australia’s Kimberly Birrell in the afternoon in Montreal.

In a blink of an eye, you might miss the biggest moment of Dan Martin’s career.

The Canadians separated a pair of finals with Japanese veteran Taro Daniel, tied 5-5 (and 40-40) in the third set when a storm struck the York University Court on Saturday, washing the game for the rest of the day.

They will resume play on the Central Field Saturday morning and get a spot in the main draw. Martin ranks 554th in the world.

Martin-Daniel’s fight is one of three qualified matches that can be completed in all qualifiers.
