Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz won four Grand Slam singles titles on his impressive resume, beating Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 6-2, 6-4 at the BNP Paribas Open on Monday night.
Alcaraz is the second seed of the outdoor competition in Wells in India, ranked third in the world, eliminating Shapovalov in just 82 minutes and scoring his ticket into 16 rounds where he will face a match between France’s Gael Monfils of France and Bulgaria of Bulgaria.
Although Alcaraz has more turnovers (21-18) than he has from Richmond Hill, Ontario, he has only five double faults and has a huge advantage in the first serve percentage (73 to 54). He won eight of nine services, and four of nine returns to the game.
Shapovalov had two ACEs, eight double faults, and won five of nine services, with only nine returning one of the matches.
Canada beat Australia’s Adam Walton 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to beat the third round of the California Championship 6-3, 6-2.
