Eugenie Bouchard, Canada, retires after the National Bank opens

Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard, who ranked fifth in the 2014 breakthrough season, retired at the National Bank Open in Montreal this year.

The Canadian Tennis Court announced in a press release Wednesday that Bushad retired at her hometown championship and said she will receive a major drawing wildcard that will be awarded from the WTA 1000 Hard Tournament which begins July 26.

Bouchard entered the Wimbledon women’s final in 2014, losing directly to Petra Kvitova. She became the first Canadian woman to compete in a Grand Slam singles final in the Open era.

She also reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open, the French Open and qualifying for the WTA final in 2014 to win the Tour’s Best Improved Player Award. Her 2014 season also included her only WTA title in the Clay-Court Nurember Cup.

Despite injuries, including a concussion at the 2015 U.S. Open and inconsistent forms prevented him from reaching these heights on the WTA Tour again, she remains a big part of the Canadian women’s team.

The 31-year-old from Westmont, Quebec represented Canada in the 2016 Olympics and won 13 games in 10 Billie Jean King Cup competitions. She worked with Gabriela Dabrowski for two wins, part of Canada’s first BJK Cup title in 2023.

“When did you know. For me, now is. Now. The beginning of it all: Montreal,” Busard posted on X’s social media platform.

Canadian Tennis CEO Gavin Ziv thanked Bouchard for his contribution to Canadian tennis.

“Seldom are athletes who are as impressed as Genie has in her extraordinary career,” Ziv said in a press release.

“Her career highlights include Wimbledon’s last appearance and the Billy Gene Gold Cup championship, which is extraordinary and a real catalyst for our country’s development of tennis,” he added. “She was and remains an incredible ambassador to our sports, representing Canadian tennis, and I want to thank her for everything she did.”
