Djokovic overcomes bad starts to reach Wimbledon quarterfinals

LONDON – Novak Djokovic overcomes an unusually unstable start to avoid his earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2016, beating 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth round.

Sitting in the front row of the Royal Box with eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, at the beginning, the 38-year-old Djokovic barely hit the grass below in the temperature of the 60s Fahrenheit on a breeze afternoon, a week later, in which there was a week of competition.

But Djokovic turned everything around enough to grab the two sets in the middle and then really soared after trailing 4-1 in the fourth quarter. He scored 14 of his last five games and last 15 points.

His bid for the eighth Wimbledon title and the 25th Grand Slam singles trophy will continue to play against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli. Cobolli reached his first major quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3) defeating the 2014 U.S. Open champion and two-time runner-up Marin Cilic.

Djokovic will appear in his 63rd Grand Slam quarterfinals.
