Canada’s Leylah Fernandez reaches the quarterfinals at Nottingham Open

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez reached the quarterfinals of the Nottingham Open Tennis Championships after defeating Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Fernandez faced nine breakthrough points in the game, but saved all the games except one. During the game, she broke Bucsa three times in six chances, completing an hour and 43 minutes to complete.

The 22-year-old from Laval, Quebec, improved to 3-0 against Busa after previous wins at the Paris Olympics and this year’s Australian Open.

Fernandez, the fifth seed of Nottingham, England, will be facing Dayana Yastreska on Friday at the WTA 250 Grass-Court event. Fernandez’s match against the 46th-ranked Ukrainian was 2-0.

The Canadians competed in the 30th place in the world and ranked first in the win on Wednesday this season with a 14-14 record.

Earlier, FĂ©lix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal in Richmond Hill, Ontario, joined forces to defeat third-seed Americans Evan King and Christian Harrison 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, in the men’s doubles quarter-finals at Terra Wortmann Open.

The two plan to face the second seeds of Italy Simone Borily and Andrea Vavasoli in the semifinals on Thursday.

In the ATP 500 event held in Hale, Germany, Russian Diamond and Shapovalov will also make their second round singles action on Thursday.
